Compatibilism is the philosophical view that free will and determinism are compatible. Determinism is the idea that all events, including human actions, are causally determined by prior events. Compatibilists argue that a person's actions can be both free and determined. For example, a person freely chooses to drink a glass of water. This choice is also caused by prior factors, such as thirst and the availability of water. Compatibilism suggests that free will exists when a person's actions result from their own desires, beliefs, and intentions, even if those desires, beliefs, and intentions are themselves caused by prior events. The focus is on the action stemming from the individual's internal states, not on the ultimate source of those states.
